Le Français Grégoire Barrère, 128e joueur mondial, a été battu (6-3, 6-4) par l’Argentin Mariano Navone, 52e mondial, samedi en demi-finale du tournoi ATP 250 de Bucarest. Issu des qualifications, Barrère ne poursuit pas sa belle aventure roumaine, stoppé en deux sets par la tête de série numéro 5.
Après avoir battu le même jour vendredi deux têtes de série, le 26e mondial américain Sebastian Korda (6-4, 6-4), puis l’Espagnol Pedro Martínez (6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-4), Barrère ne connaîtra pas à 30 ans la première finale de sa carrière sur le circuit principal. Mais pour le joueur passé en moins d’un an de la 49e à la 128e place mondiale, ce tournoi reste tout de même une réussite, pour sa deuxième demi-finale à ce niveau après celle au tournoi d’Eastbourne en juin 2023.
Le premier set a commencé par trois breaks : Navone, Barrère, Navone. Mais l’Argentin de 23 ans a ensuite su garder son service et faire déjouer le Français. Mené 5-3, 40-0, Barrère a sauvé trois balles de set sur son service mais la quatrième a été la bonne pour l’Argentin. Après avoir battu son compatriote et tête de série numéro 1 Francisco Cerundolo (5-7, 6-4, 7-5) vendredi, Navone a confirmé en remportant la deuxième manche malgré un break du Français. Navone a conclu le match sur sa deuxième opportunité, après une faute directe de Barrère, un coup trop long derrière la ligne. Il jouera dimanche en finale contre le Hongrois Marton Fucsovics, vainqueur du Chilien Alejandro Tabilo (6-4, 6-4).
